Briller n'est pas un crime

“Shining is not a crime”: a campaign against anti-LGBTI violence — one poster, three versions

Briller n'est pas un crime — Shining is not a crime. Violence is.
Shining is not a crime. Violence is.

Three A2 posters for a campaign against anti-LGBTI violence, signed as if the Lyon metropolitan authority carried it alongside SOS homophobie and the Centre LGBTI+ — an unsolicited project, for a very real cause. One message for those who suffer it, one for those who hear it, one for everyone — and on every poster the same reminder: don't stay alone, press charges, call 17 or 3919.

The stance: turn the gaze around. The mouth, the ear, the eye — the parts of the face the street scrutinises, judges and sometimes strikes because they wear lipstick, piercings or rainbow eyeshadow — are photographed in extreme, almost intrusive close-up. What serves as a pretext for the assault becomes the image itself, sublimated and claimed.

One construction for all three: a full-bleed photo, a headline in heavy capitals, one word set in a colour that answers the make-up — the blue of silence, the pink of complicity, the purple of shine — and the institutional signature at the foot. The source portraits were tiny: enlarged four times by AI, then retouched and recomposed in Affinity Photo to hold A2 at 300 dpi.
